WordPress displays many of the characteristics of Web 2.0. it is immediately obvious on the WordPress homepage where statistics show that there is 414, 537 bloggers on the website today. Tim O’Reilly identified many elements of Web 2.0 in 2005 and blogging was a major part of this. WordPress is not just a blog host but one which is collaboratively created and maintained. The participatory culture is shown in the website “About” section where it says the website “was created by and for the community.” WordPress is part of the opensource movement, and is all user generated content which is a critical element of web 2.0. The way in which this encourages produsers, interactivity and active creators is important to web 2.0 and the survival of WordPress as not for profit website. WordPress is also customisable and connects to other social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. These are other elements identified by Tim O’Reilly as key to web 2.0.
